Women’s Day and Men’s Day
On March 6, we once again visited the social welfare home at ul. Wiktorska. We were greeted by the warm, kind and longing faces of our friends, the DPS residents. We had prepared something special for this occasion. Due to the upcoming events – Women’s Day and Men’s Day, we brought tulips – pink for women, yellow for men. It turns out that the 65+ community was not yet familiar with Men’s Day, so they learned something new from us.
There was much gratitude and joy; it’s nice to receive such a gift.
We also set ourselves an ambitious goal: to ensure that the seniors integrate with each other. Even though they have known each other for many months, and sometimes even years, they do not know much about each other. So we enthusiastically took on the role of listeners and interviewers to first get to know them better and then organize activities for them. It was something amazing! We were able to find out how the seniors spent their time when they were our age. For example, one gentleman used to graze cows in the meadow and bathed in the river. He told us about this completely different reality for us. What interests do seniors have? It is impossible to answer this clearly because they are completely different and very interesting. Mrs. Irena’s passion is cooking, especially “zupa zacierkowa”. Another lady mentioned sleeping as her hobby (I gave her a high five). There was also traveling, mountain climbing and horse riding. And Wiktoria J. has a lot in common with the latter, so an enthusiastic conversation ensued.
Once we learned a little about the seniors, we organized a short competition for them. We named specific interests, appearance features, and favorite colours, and the participants had to guess who we were talking about. Mrs. Wandzia turned out to be the unrivaled winner – she answered almost all of the questions correctly.
After the quiz, we had to quickly return to school for our next lessons. We said goodbye with regret, but we will come back next month with another dose of energy, optimism and youthful freshness, which is so needed by older people. Each visit to them also changes us for the better. We feel great satisfaction from selflessly giving what is best in ourselves to another person.
