CAS
Creativity Activity Service – the power of engagement
Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) is a part of the IB DP core and thereby an essential element of the IB DP curriculum. Although CAS must be completed as part of the IB DP, in reality many students see it both as a way of extending their studies and an opportunity to step away from their desk and explore their own interests and passions.
CAS strands
CAS contains three strands: Creativity, Activity and Service. As part of CAS, students must demonstrate development in each of these strands.
- Creativity
Exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance. Creativity comes from students’ talents, passions and imagination, using critical thinking and/or an aesthetic eye in order to create something unique.
- Activity
Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle. This should be appropriate to students’ current abilities, but must also push them to challenge themselves.
- Service
An unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for students and provides real and meaningful contribution to others, society or the world.
CAS rules
There are very few rules around CAS, but those rules that are in place are extremely important.
- Academic integrity
- All students must complete one CAS Project – a series of consistent CAS Experiences. That CAS Project must involve collaboration
- Service must be unpaid
- CAS must take over a continuous 18-month period, meaning it is continued over Winter and Summer breaks
CAS assessment
CAS is assessed as PASS/FAIL only. However, all CAS requirements have to be met in order for a student to be granted with the IB diploma.
