Introducing Our Montessori School’s Sustainable Garden Project
As students of the Warsaw Montessori High School, we had the honor of attending The Montessori Europe Annual Congress 2023 in Gdańsk. There, we proudly represented our perspectives on local societal impact concerning sustainable development. It was a wonderful experience to connect with fellow Montessori students from across the globe.
In an age where sustainability and environmental awareness are of paramount importance, our school has recognized a pressing issue: the absence of sustainable gardening practices and comprehensive environmental education. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, our project targets both the well-being of our students and proactive measures against climate change. Despite the limited knowledge among students about sustainable gardening, our dependence on external water sources, and the lack of hands-on environmental education for younger grades, we’re set to make a change.
Our objectives are clear: we aim to uplift students’ knowledge on sustainable gardening and composting, utilize rainwater for our garden’s needs, create a ‘sense’ garden for mental well-being, and actively involve our students in garden care. To combat the outlined problems, we have strategized a solution comprising a compost system, a rainwater harvesting structure, planting sensorial plants like lavender, and scheduling enlightening sessions for the younger classes.
Our needs to push this project to fruition are both monetary and human resources. We seek funding for system setups and plant purchases and call upon volunteers for the dual tasks of garden maintenance and enlightening education sessions. Thankfully, we have unwavering support from our school management and educators, emphasizing the integration of the garden into our academic curriculum.
Moving forward, our next steps are outlined and ambitious. We will design our garden, procure necessary materials and ensure the participation of students. To keep the momentum, regular educational sessions will be slotted, and the foundation of a dedicated garden club will be laid to oversee the project’s sustenance. We invite everyone to be a part of this green revolution, ensuring a brighter, sustainable future for our students.
